Paul Phillip Cook, 69, of Portsmouth, passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2017 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born November 23, 1947 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Wilfred and Ruby Lea Warnock Cook.
Paul retired from Norfolk Southern Railway Company after 38 years of service as a special agent. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminal Justice from Ohio University and he was a 1965 Portsmouth High School graduate.
Paul attended the Community of Christ in McDermott and he was a member of the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion. An avid marksman, he was a talented wood worker and photographer. Paul was a true patriot who’s life motto was “God-Family-Country”. He was a Vietnam era Air Force veteran and earned the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.
Surviving is his wife of 49 years, Patricia “Pat” Ellen Jordan Cook, whom he married October 21, 1967 in McDermott; two children, Phillip “Sean” (Laura) Cook of Columbus and Theresa “Teri” (Mike) Carter of South Shore, KY; two siblings, Dennis Bruce (Louise) Cook of Colorado and Evelyn Groves of Minford; a niece with whom he was reared, Margie Bussa; a granddaughter, Deanna M. Ferguson; and the beloved family pet, Sampson.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by five siblings, Thomas and Billy David Cook, Ruth Rhoden, Vivian Burns and Faye Seevers.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Evangelist David Orin officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park. The James Dickey Post #23 Honor Detail will conduct military graveside rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. and Monday from noon until the funeral hour.
In honor of Mr. Cook’s service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Air Force will fly at the funeral home.
