Ruth Berthina Ranum, 96, of Lucasville, OH, a former Northwood, IA resident, passed away Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth, OH. She was born August 24, 1920 in Worth County, IA to the late John and Ida Berthina Lokken Dagestad.
She was a homemaker and owner/operator of the former Ruth’s Café and Quality Café in Northwood. Ruth was baptized and confirmed at Silver Lake Lutheran Church and she was an active member of the Northwood First Lutheran Church.
Surviving are three sons, James (Mary) Ranum of Waukon, IA, Clarence “Chuck” Ranum of Pequot Lakes, MN and Michael Ranum of Fort Collins, CO; six daughters, Catherine (Dale) Johnson of Pequot Lakes, Ranae Montgomery of Lucasville, Mary (Terry) Williamson of Glenville, MN, Barbara Montgomery of Lucasville, Ila (Terry) Jensen of Northwood and Carol (Robert) Skipper of Live Oak, FL; four daughters-in-law, Carole Deere of Foley, AL, Patricia Ranum of Wells, MN, Betty Ranum of Manly, IA and Lisa Wilson of Osage, IA; one sister, Betsey Johnson of Newark, OH; 36 grandchildren ; 54 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Ruth was also preceded in death by her husband, Harold A. Ranum, whom she married October 12, 1941; four sons, John, Duane, David and Garry Ranum; two sons-in-law, Danny Montgomery and Patrick Montgomery; a daughter-in-law, Sue Ranum; one grandson, Chad Ranum; two brothers, Palmer and Ingvald Dagestad; and a sister, Janette Schave.
One of her greatest joys in life was baking for her family, especially cookies for her grandchildren who called her “Cookie Grandma”. She leaves behind an amazingly close family over 100 strong.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 A.M. Monday at Northwood First Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 P.M.on Sunday at the Conner Colonial Chapel in Northwood. Burial will be in Shell Rock Cemetery in Northwood, IA.
