   Stewart A. Mell Jr. 90, of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2017 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born August 4, 1926 in McKeesport, PA, a son of the late Stewart A. and Margaret Grace Olexa Mell Sr. Stewart had retired from Martin-Marietta as a buyer where he worked for 18 years. He previously had been employed as a supervisor at the former Empire-Detroit Steel Corporation for 13 years. Stewart was a member of the Cornerstone United Methodist Church and had earned a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration from Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, PA. A World War II Army veteran, he received the Army Occupation (Japan) Medal, Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one Bronze Star.

    Surviving is his wife of 64 years, Mary Jane Bond Mell, whom he married in Dormont, PA on May 2, 1953; two sons, Gary Stewart (Jan) Mell of Hilliard and David Lee (Mary) Mell of Flatswoods, KY; his daughter, Leslie Jane Clifford of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren, Erin Greene, Michelle Mell, Drew Mell, Kathryn Holt, Daniel Mell, Sara Covert, Thomas Clifford; and two great grandchildren, Madison Greene and Larkin Covert.

   Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the RALPH F. SCOTT FUNERAL HOME in Portsmouth with the Rev. Greg Carter officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 p.m. until the funeral hour. Interment will be in Jefferson Memorial  Cemetery in Pittsburgh on Monday at 2 p.m.

   The James Dickey Post of the American Legion will conduct military honors at the funeral home. The flag of the U.S. Army will be flown at the funeral home Sunday honoring Mr. Mell’s service to our nation.
