David Alan Cropper, 91, of Portsmouth, passed away Monday, January 29, 2018 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born April 30, 1926 in Portsmouth to the late S. Jackson and Ruth Marie Yates Cropper.
Dave retired as supervisor of general accounting from Ohio Valley Electric Corporation after 32 years of service. He was a member and former elder and deacon at First Presbyterian Church and a 1944 Portsmouth High School graduate. In 1950 he received a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Ohio University.
A World War II Army veteran, David earned the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a life member of the James Dickey Post #23 American Legion, Voiture 40&8 #443 and VFW Chapter #3174. He served as Ohio State Commander of the Ohio American Legion and is a member of the Ohio Veterans Hall of Fame. He was a former member of the Legion National Security Committee and former chairman of the Post #23 Bingo Committee, which raised thousands for charity.
He also volunteered for more than 50 years for the Post #23 Honor Guard, performing over 1000 military rites for deceased veterans. Dave raised the flag for every PHS Trojan football game for over 50 years on behalf of the James Dickey Post and he was manager of the post’s baseball team for over 30 years.
A Kentucky Colonel, Dave was a member of the Auxiliary Highway Patrol for over 30 years, he was a member of RSVP, the Portsmouth Bicentennial Committee, the Main Streets Portsmouth Committee, the Ohio Erie Canal Society and he served Meals on Wheels for many years.
Surviving are his children, David A. (Karen) Cropper, Jr. of Seal Beach, CA, Mark (Paula) Cropper of Newnan, GA and Cynthia Freytag of Portsmouth; seven grandchildren; Shane Nunley, Jason, Riley, Joey, Andy, Alyssa Cropper and Kelly Blankenbeckley and six great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Jerry Cropper; his son-in-law, Joseph Freytag; and granddaughter-in-law, Rhonda Nunley.
A Memorial Service will be held at First Presbyterian Church on Thursday, February 8, 2018 at 1:00 P.M. with Rev. Evan Fisher officiating.
The family will receive friends at the church from noon until the funeral hour. Interment will follow in the Greenlawn Cemetery. The James Dickey Post American Legion Honor Detail will conduct Military Rites.
The flag of the U.S. Army will fly at the funeral home in honor of Mr. Cropper’s service to our country.
