Gilbert Carl Hayes, 81, of Portsmouth, passed away Wed., Dec. 11, 2019 at SOMC. He was born April 10, 1938 in Hamilton, OH, a son of the late Carl Rutherford Hayes and Beulah Martin Rook.
Gil was a member of Christians Beyond Church and a 1956 graduate of Franklin High School. He had worked as a meat cutter both in Michigan and at the former Millhuff’s Department Store. Gilbert was also an Army veteran.
Surviving is his wife, Mary Alice Locher Hayes; a brother, David William Hayes of Franklin; two sisters, Linda Lou White of Newaygo, MI and Barbara Gail DeHart of Beavercreek; a stepsister, Mary Ann Hitchler of Branson, MO; and friends and caregivers, David & Paula Duncan and Barbara Duncan, all of Rosemount.
In addition to his parents, Gilbert was also preceded in death by his first wife, Joan Lewis Hayes, on Aug.19, 2002; an infant son; stepfather, Irvin Rook; and stepmother, Rosella Hayes.
Private services will be held under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
The James Dickey American Legion Post #23 Honor Detail will provide military rites.
