James William “Jim” Hufferd, 83. of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, Feb.22, 2018 at SOMC. Jim was born January 2, 1935 in Rushville, IN, a son of the late Margaret Ellen Jordan Hufferd. He was a radio personality for 21 years at WNXT and at WPAY for 18 years, having been the voice of the Portsmouth Trojans and performing many other duties at the radio stations. Jim was a member of St. Mary’s Church in both Portsmouth and Rushville, where he was actively involved serving in many various duties. He was an avid bowler and a member of the Portsmouth Men’s Bowling Association Hall of Fame where he served as its spokesman. Jim had served on many committees and organizations promoting the Portsmouth area. He was also a 1953 graduate of Rushville High School.
Jim was preceded in death May 8, 2006 by his wife Betty Jane Cox Hufferd, whom he married in Rushville Feb. 8, 1954. Surviving is his daughter, Carol Jane (Brad) Creech of Sciotoville; 8 grandchildren, Emily Hufferd, Elizabeth Ard, Matthew Hufferd, Jared Kalb, Misty Jayne, David Hufferd, Belinda Hufferd and Kaitlyn Hufferd; many great-grandchildren; and his brother Max (Jan) Hufferd of Greensburg, IN.
Also preceding him in death were 2 sons, Mark Howard and Scott David Hufferd; and two brothers, John and Thomas Hufferd.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Tuesday at 10 A.M. at St. Mary’s Church with the Reverend Joseph Yocum officiating, followed by interment in Greenlawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth Monday from 5-8 P.M. The recitation of the Rosary will be Monday at 8 P.M. at the funeral home.
