Jerry Lee Matheny, 78, of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, Feb. 8, 2018 at the Minford Retirement Center. He was born August 23, 1939 in Portsmouth, a son of the late George Robert Matheny and Evelyn Miller Franklin.
A 1958 graduate of Portsmouth East High School, Jerry retired after 43 years of service with AEP where he was the storeroom attendant. He rebuilt and painted cars for many years and as a young man enjoyed hunting, fishing, NASCAR and racing his own cars.
Surviving Jerry are his two children, Stephen R. (Diane) Matheny of Wheelersburg and Nancy (Joe) Williams of Lucasville; two brothers, Gary (Susan) Fultz of South Webster and Phillip Fultz of Wheelersburg; a sister, Brenda Lace of Florida; his stepmother, Dolores Matheny of Portsmouth; five grandchildren, Nathan Napier, Mike and Robbie Matheny, Julie (Matt) Schiesser and Kenny Williams; and eight great-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents, Jerry was also preceded in death by a sister, Susie Kirkbride.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Brian Baer and Calvin Ray Evans officiating. Interment will be in Memorial Burial Park.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 6 p.m. and one hour prior to services Monday.
