PVT Arthur C. “Midge” Waddell, 22, of Franklin Furnace, Ohio, died in Luxembourg, Germany during World War II. PVT Waddell was the son of Robert & Missouri Waddell, Sr., who survived him at the time of his death. He was born March 20, 1922 in Middletown, OH.
Wacdell was a member of the Green Twp. High School basketball team from 1937-1940 and graduated from the school in 1940. He entered the service and trained at Ft. Thomas, KY where he was with the 10th Infantry. He also trained at Ft. Custer, MI and from there was sent to Iceland, then Europe. He was serving in Company I, 10 th Infantry when he was killed on Christmas Day, 1944 in Luxembourg of shrapnel wounds.
Also surviving were a wife and 6-year old son who were residing in Iceland when Waddell’s body was repatriated in April 1949; two brothers, Robert Waddell, Jr. who resided in Franklin Furnace, Alfred Waddell; and a sister, Sylvia, who was of Piqua.
The funeral services were held at Junior Furnace Baptist Church with Jerry Bruce and George Mosley officiating with interment in Junior Furnace Cemetery. Arrangements were under the direction of George Emrick of the Emrick Funeral Home, forerunner of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home.
