Betty Jean Duckett, 77, of Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, October 18, 2022 at the SOMC Hospice Center. She was born March 12, 1945 in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Clyde Eugene & Lillian O’Harrah Hamilton.
Betty was a homemaker who enjoyed looking after her grandchildren. She attended 7th Street Christian Baptist Church and had been a nurse’s aide at the former Mercy Hospital before having her daughter. She was a 1965 graduate of Portsmouth High School.
Her husband, James Lee Duckett, preceded her in death on December 25, 2016. The couple married in Portsmouth in 1965.
Surviving is her daughter, Jennifer L. (Fred) Scarberry of Portsmouth; three grandchildren, Fredrick James (Audrey Evans) Scarberry, Cortney Rose Marie Scarberry and Gracie Ann Scarberry; five great-grandchildren, Wilfred Beck Scarberry, Alice Evans, Akana Evans, Kali Evans and Kennlee Mershon; two brothers, Howard (Sue) Hamilton of West Portsmouth and Wayne (Barbara) Hamilton of CA; one sister, Joyce (Roger) Arey of Cincinnati; several brothers and sisters-in-law, including a special sister-in-law, Nancy Arunotong of Leonardtown, MD.
Betty was also preceded in death by an infant son, James Lee Duckett, Jr.; three brothers, Ray, Rodney and Jimmy Hamilton; three sisters, Patricia Hamilton, Mary Ann Mowery and Carol Spriggs; and her beloved dog, Bella.
Funeral services will be held at noon on Thursday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Lisa Crawford officiating and interment in Garvin Cemetery.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 A.M. until the service hour on Thursday.
