Boyd Edward “Eddie” Orrell, 78, of Portsmouth, passed away Saturday, August 7, 2021 at SOMC. A son of the late Earl C. and Lula Johnson, he was born December 13, 1942, in Norfolk, VA.
Eddie worked for 46 years as an engineer with Norfolk & Southern Railway. He was a Vietnam era Army veteran and attended High Praises Church of God. When he wasn’t working on the railroad, a job he loved, he enjoyed spending time with his family and restoring old cars. Eddie had also been a former youth baseball coach in WV prior to moving to the Portsmouth area.
He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Fannie Lou Varner Orrell, whom he married Dec. 17, 1966 in Virginia; three sons, Boyd E. “Skip” Orrell, Jr. of Lucasville, Michael Todd Orrell of Portsmouth and Danny Ray Orrell of Minford; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Lula (Garland) Gallimore of Hillsboro; and brothers & sisters-in-law, Betty Sue Boyd of SD, Donna (Ralph) Hunt of GA and Dan (Sandy) Varner of WV.
In addition to his parents, Eddie was also preceded in death by several siblings.
Funeral services will be held at Noon Wednesday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Wendell Gallimore officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park. The James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Detail will conduct Military Graveside Rites.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Tuesday from 5 to 7 P.M. and Wednesday from 11 A.M. until the funeral hour. Due to increasing COVID risks, the family requests that all who attend wear masks.
In honor of Mr. Orrell’s service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Army will fly at the funeral home.
