Flora Ellen "Flo" (Rowland) Shaw

   Flora Ellen Rowland “Flo” Shaw, 93, of Portsmouth, passed away at her home on Monday, January 2, 2023, surrounded by her family. She was born August 28, 1929, in Greenup County, KY, the eldest child of the late Charles Kent and Mary Elizabeth Kouns Rowland.

   On March 27, 1948, she married Leonard Mack “Nick” Shaw in Greenup, KY, and the couple was married 43 years until his death on January 12, 1992.  

   Flo was the well-known operator/owner of the former Design Plus Hair & Skin Care Center, as well as Flo Shaw’s Beauty Salon, both of Portsmouth. As a younger woman, she worked at the former William’s Manufacturing Co. Flo loved her family and enjoyed cooking for them and organizing their gatherings. She and Nick enjoyed square dancing and camping in their younger days. A member of The Red Hat Society and SSU Golden Bears, Flo volunteered at the SOMC Cancer Center and for church events such as the Single Parents’ Fair, and she hosted Bible Study in her home. She was devoted to her church family at Christ’s Community Church and missed being able to worship with them the past few years. She was a shining example of a life well-lived as the matriarch of her loving family.

   Surviving is her son, Leonard (Darrell Waddle) Shaw, Jr. of Columbus; three daughters, Judith Bennett of Chillicothe, Barbara Porginski and Lenora Bernardo, both of Portsmouth; two siblings, Henry Rowland of Greenup Co., KY and Elma Stevenson of South Portsmouth, KY; seven grandchildren, Jodi (Jeff Webb) Bennett, Liza (Scott Lenik) Bennett, Joseph “Joey” (Kristin) Bennett, Jr., Luke (Brandy Stiverson) Porginski, Eve (Keith) Phipps, Leslie (Jason) Estep and Samuel “Bo” Frowine; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.

   Flo was also preceded in death by two sons-in-law, Joseph Bennett and Tyler Porginski; and three siblings, Harold Rowland, Olive “Polly” Lewis and Allie Covert.

   Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Friday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Scott Rawlings, Minister, officiating and interment in Collier Memorial Gardens, South Portsmouth, KY.

   The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 4 to 7 PM and one hour prior to services Friday.
