Nita Lee Russell, 94, of Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2022, with family by her side at Brookdale Muirfield in Dublin. She was born September 30, 1927 in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Glen Leroy and Wanetta Gladys (Ressinger) Manley.
Nita was of the Methodist faith and a graduate of Portsmouth East High School and the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing. She had worked as a med-surg nurse, but left nursing to become a full-time mother. She remained an active member the Mercy Alumni Association as well as the hospital’s TWIG Guild for many years. Nita served as a Brownie troop leader for her daughters and she volunteered for Meals on Wheels and, a great animal lover (especially cats), Sierra’s Haven for New & Used Pets.
Her husband, William Glenn Russell, preceded her in death September 3, 2010.
Surviving are her three children, Andrew Mark (Lisa) Russell of Portsmouth, Cathy Lee (Mark Johnson) Lawler of Oceanside, CA and Emily Ann (Stephen) Selby of Dublin; five grandchildren, Meagan (Chris) Hogan, Jay Lawler, Russell Lawler, Sarah Maren Selby and Terra Elizabeth Selby; two great-grandchildren, Moira and Grady Hogan; two sisters, Sue Ann Hunter of St. Petersburg, FL and Mary Lou (Thom) Miller of Magnolia, GA; and several nieces and a nephew. Nita was also blessed to live in a unique and caring neighborhood, where neighbors became friends and took care of and looked out for one another.
Nita was also preceded in death by her brother, Richard Manley.
A Memorial Service will be held from 2:30-3:00 P.M. on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Greg Carter officiating.
The family will welcome friends from 1:00 P.M. until the service hour at the funeral home.
