Obituary

   Norman Edward McGinnis, 90, of Portsmouth, passed away on Tuesday, August 22, 2023, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born April 20, 1933, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Finley J. and Birdie Jordan McGinnis.

   Norm retired after 25 years from Southern Ohio Correctional Facility where he worked as Maintenance Supervisor. He was a member of Wheelersburg Baptist Church and a 1951 Portsmouth High School graduate. Norm was also a member of the Aurora Lodge Free & Accepted Masons, the Scottish Rite Valley of Cincinnati, and Eastern Star. He enjoyed watching birds from his backyard and fishing. An Army Veteran of the Korean War, he was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and National Defense Service Medal for his service.

   Surviving is a son, Randall Edward (Patty) McGinnis of Redding, CA; a daughter-in-law, Debra I. McGinnis of Portsmouth; a stepdaughter, Debby Collins of Sciotoville; nine grandchildren, Christopher (Jamie) McGinnis, Rebecca R. (Bruce) Kalb, Lane McGinnis, Ryan (Candi) Kelly, Amy (Wade) Coriell, J.R. Collins, Tony (Becky) Sowards, Tara (Robbie) Bedford and Ashley (Josh) Green; 20 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

   His first wife, Etta Louise Rayburn McGinnis, preceded him in death on May 6, 2005, and his second wife, Zelma Faye Collins McGinnis, preceded him in death on January 23, 2021.

   Norman was also preceded in death by his son, Steven Christopher McGinnis; a stepson, David Collins; and siblings, William Arthur McGinnis, David Eugene  “Gene” McGinnis, Gladys Hossman and Marilyn Whaley.

   Funeral services will be held at 10 A.M. Saturday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Bradley Brandt officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park. Military graveside rites will be performed by the American Legion James Dickey Post Honor Detail.

   The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday from 5 to 6 P.M. and from 9 to 10 A.M. Saturday. A Masonic Service will be held Friday at 6 P.M., conducted by the Aurora Lodge.

   In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to SOMC Hospice, 201-25th St., Portsmouth, OH 45662.

   In honor of Mr. McGinnis’ service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Army will flag at the funeral home.
