Patricia A. (O'Leary) Hendricks

   Patricia A. O’Leary Hendricks, 78, of Portsmouth, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2023, at the SOMC Hospice Center with her beloved husband at her side. Pat was born February 6, 1944, in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late Gerald “Jerry” D. and Ruby Fay Worrell O’Leary.

   An educator in the Portsmouth City Schools for more than 30 years, Pat enjoyed making an impact on the hundreds of students she taught throughout the years. She continued her work with young people by volunteering for and serving as treasurer for the Dorothy Knost Music Workshop at her church, Cornerstone United Methodist, for over 40 years. In additional to the workshop, Pat was a very active member at Cornerstone and served wherever needed. She was a member of the former Junior Women’s City Club and she was an avid reader and gifted seamstress. A member of Delta Kappa Gamma, Pat earned a Bachelor of Education from Ohio University and she was a 1962 Portsmouth High School graduate.

   Surviving is her husband of 56 years, John Carroll Hendricks. The couple married on August 21, 1966, in Portsmouth and were blessed with two children, John Christopher “Chris” (Katie) Hendricks of Mint Hill, NC and Jill Christin Hendricks (Gary) Jewell of Stallings, NC.

   Pat is also survived by two brothers, Jerry Mike O’Leary of Aiken, SC and Kelly (Sue) O’Leary of Matthews, NC; and four grandchildren, Austin Jewell, Gabrielle Jewell, Charles Hendricks and Benjamin Hendricks; her brother-in-law, James (Cheryl) Hendricks of Middletown; former brother-in-law, John Cook of Pittsburgh, PA & Bradenton, FL; nieces, nephews and their families; and many dear friends.

   In addition to her parents, Pat was also preceded in death by two sisters-in-law, Nancy “Toots” O’Leary and Jane Hendricks Cook.

   Private services will be held under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
