Roger Finis Melvin, 69, of Durham, NC, passed away at 11:58 P.M. Sunday, October 2, 2022, at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born December 27, 1952, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Isabell Holden and Finis Berndt “Muff” Melvin.
Roger retired as a corrections officer from the Federal Correctional Institution in Ashland, KY. A member of Allen Chapel AME Church, he was a 1972 Portsmouth High School graduate and he had attended West Virginia State University where he received a full football scholarship. Roger was also a member of the Trinity Masonic Lodge #9 and the Cincinnati Sinai Temple #59.
Surviving is his wife of 25 years, Deborah Ann Burnette Melvin. The couple was married June 21, 1997, in West Portsmouth.
He will be missed by a host of family and friends across the United States.
Funeral services with Facebook Livestream will be held at 12:30 Saturday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Bishop Harold Bell officiating. A Masonic Service will be held at the funeral home at Noon conducted by the Trinity Masonic Lodge. Please visit the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home Facebook page to join the Livestream beginning at Noon.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home Saturday from 11 AM until the Masonic Service begins at Noon.
