Troy Eugene Hairston

Troy Eugene Hairston, 48, of Sylmar, CA, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, January 29, 2021 at his home. He was born May 11, 1972 in Portsmouth and was the son of the late Ruby (Burns) Hairston.

Troy was the Assistant Principal at Inglewood High School where he also taught Spanish. A 1991 Portsmouth High School graduate, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Findlay and a Master of Arts with School Leadership Option from California State University-Dominguez Hills in 2017.

Troy is survived by his two foster children, Quincy and Jakori Cooper both of Sylmar, CA; his birth mother, Wanda Kay Howard of Rochester, NY; nine brothers, Robert Dale (Theresa) Hairston of Portsmouth, Tony Ray Hairston of Winston-Salem, NC, Carl Hairston of Portsmouth, Brett Hairston of Canal Winchester, Christopher Hairston of Columbus, Barre’ Hairston of Canal Winchester, Brandon Hairston, George Hairston, and  Gregory Lee (Ebony) Howard all of Rochester, NY; six sisters, Judy McGee of Columbus, Valerie (Rick) Terrell of Cincinnati, Vanessa Boyd of Westerville, Vangela Barnes and Rosalind Bonney, both of Canal Winchester, and Wanda Hairston of McDonough, GA;  Aunts & Uncles, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

In addition to his mother Ruby Hairston, Troy was also preceded in death by three siblings, Michael Davis, Marvin Smith and Mollie Battle.

Troy was loved by his co-workers and students at Inglewood High, who posted the following on their website: “Mr. Hairston will be remembered as a warm, caring and nurturing person. He made sure that his students were taken care of first. We will miss his presence, his dedication and the support that he provided for our staff, students and the entire Inglewood Unified School District community. “

 The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date.
