William Lawrence Lewis, 84, of Lucasville, passed away on Sunday, November 19, 2023, at Rosemount Pavilion in Portsmouth. Bill was born September 26, 1939, in Portsmouth, a son of the late James A. and Margaret E. Vernier Lewis.
Bill retired after many years farming his land in Lucasville. He was a member of the Scioto County Farm Bureau and a longtime board member of the Scioto Soil and Water Conservation District. In 1991, Bill was recognized by the Portsmouth Area Chamber of Commerce as the Farmer of the Year.
From 1962 to 1964, he served in the U.S. Army where he was recognized as a sharpshooter. Bill was a member of Temple Baptist Church and he was a 1957 graduate of Portsmouth West High School.
While working as a mechanic at an automobile dealership in Michigan as a young man, he met his future wife, Linda Ann Lemmon, in Northville. They were married on September 20, 1969, and recently celebrated their 54th anniversary.
His wife, Linda Lewis; and a sister, Betty Elrod of Lexington, KY, survive.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by nine siblings, James Lewis, Jr., Bernard Lewis, John Lewis, Leroy Lewis, Catherine Young, Thelma Cooper, Louise Hatton, Evelyn Montavon and Anna Hayslip.
Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. on Monday, November 27, 2023, at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. John Gowdy officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth.
The family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to services.
Burial will be in Rural Hill Cemetery in Northville, MI at a later date.
