Alfred Henry “J.J.” Johnson, 68, of Portsmouth, passed away Saturday, Dec. 8, 2018 at Cornerstone Hospital in Huntington, WV. He was born Sept. 8, 1950 in Cleveland to the late Alfred and Dolores Gomez Johnson, Sr.
J.J. had worked as a corrections officer at SOCF and had attended Living Faith Temple. A Vietnam War Army veteran, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal with two Overseas Bars.
He is survived by his wife, Eloyse White Johnson; two sons, Michael A. Hughes of Columbus and Demetrius L. Johnson of Portsmouth; four daughters, Kia C. (Charles) Johnson of Columbus, Shahara N. Brown of Dayton, Ambria J. Johnson and Jasmine J. (Marius) Johnson, both of Portsmouth; three siblings, Manuel E. Johnson of Cleveland, Timothy D. Johnson of Portsmouth and Lolita J. Johnson of Vacaville, CA; many grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and their families.
In addition to his parents, J.J. was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Janessa D. Johnson; and a sister, Sheila D. Johnson.
Funeral services will be held at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth, Wednesday, Dec.12, 2018 at 1 P.M. with Elder Larry McGinnis officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Wednesday from 11 A.M. until the funeral hour.
James Dickey Post 23 American Legion Honor Guard will conduct military services.
The flag of the U.S. Army will fly at the funeral home Wednesday in honor of Mr. Johnson’s service to our country.
