Roger Miller Obituary

Roger Dean Miller, 89, of Portsmouth, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at the SOMC Hospice Center. He was born January 5, 1934 in Portsmouth, a son of the late Harold Edward and Avanelle Florence Ward Miller.

Roger was employed by the former Chabot’s Petroleum before joining the United States Army. He served during the Korean Conflict and received the Good Conduct Medal. He returned to Portsmouth after serving his country and was re-hired at Chabot’s Petroleum as a salesman and worked there for many years. He finished his career at Bob & Floyd’s Tire Sales and Service as a salesman/manager after 40-plus years of working.

The founder of The Anchor Pad Marina in Portsmouth, Roger was a Kentucky Colonel and a former member of the Moose Lodge and Eagles Aerie, as well as the UCT.  He was a very active and dedicated member of the James Dickey American Legion Post #23 and served many years on the post’s Honor Detail, providing military rites for fallen veterans until his health prevented him from participating in early 2022. Roger was also a member of the 40 & 8 and enjoyed many of the club’s activities including visiting various nursing homes and hospitals during the Christmas season.

On December 12, 1953, Roger married Mary Louise Dunn Miller, and the couple was married 37 years when she died on October 5, 1991.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Connie Lynn and James Piekenbrock of Miamisburg; his son and daughter-in-law, Todd Dean and Pamela Sue Miller of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Jason, Matthew and Michael Piekenbrock and Megan Miller; four great-grandchildren, Brody, Logan, Aliana and Lachlan; several nieces, nephews and their families; and many friends, including a very special friend, Meredith Glaze.

Roger was also preceded in death by two brothers, Richard H. and David L. Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 11 A.M. Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Pastor Gerald Penix officiating and interment in Memorial Burial Park. The James Dickey Post #23 Honor Detail will provide military rites.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 5 P.M. and Monday from 10 A.M until the funeral hour.
