Helen (Casey) Akers

   Helen Casey Akers, 90, of Portsmouth, passed away Thursday, October 19, 2017 at her home. She was born May 5, 1927 in Portsmouth, a daughter of the late John Willis and Nettie Louise O’Doherty Casey.

   Helen was a Christian and she enjoyed painting. She retired from SOCF where she had worked as the secretary of psychological services for many years. The owner of the former Crichton Office Supply, she had also worked at the former Columbia Theater. Following her retirement, she worked at Perfect Scents with her daughter and as a  U.S. Census and RSVP volunteer. Helen was very proud of contributing to the war effort by working as a secretary with the Judge Advocate General Office (JAG) at the Pentagon during World War II.

   Her husband, Karl Shirley Akers, whom she married August 30, 1947 in Birmingham, AL, preceded her in death July 26, 1982.

   Surviving are her daughter, Kathleen Suzan (Tony) Lavinder, with whom she made her home; a son, Karl Douglas Akers of Rosemount; a brother, Frank Casey of Lucasville; her uncle, Roy O’Doherty of Rosemount; a cousin, Nancy Casey of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Michael (Amy) Akers, Angela (Shane) Akers-Maxwell, Toni (Dale) McKinley and Jed (Jessica) Lavinder; nine great-grandchildren; and her former daughter-in-law Pam Akers of Portsmouth.

   A sister, Joanne Oswald, also preceded her in death.

   Funeral services will be held at noon Monday at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Rev. Tom Charles officiating and interment in Scioto Burial Park.The SOCF Honor Guard will offer vigil and graveside rites.

   The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the funeral hour Monday.
